What actually happens in a free Lynn's Learning assessment

Booking a free assessment but not sure what you're walking into? Here's exactly what happens on the day, start to finish.

"Free assessment" can sound like code for a sales pitch. We get why parents are wary. So here's the plain version of what a Lynn's Learning assessment actually is, what your child does, what you'll walk away with, and why there's genuinely no catch.

What is the free assessment, exactly?

It's a short, friendly level-check for your child, followed by a one-on-one chat with you about what we'd recommend. Half an hour per subject, an hour if you're looking at both Maths and English. It's free, there's no obligation to enrol, and it doesn't feel like a test.

The point isn't to grade your child or sell you a program. It's to find out where they actually are: where they're confident, where they hesitate, and how they work through something they haven't seen before. That's what tells us whether we can help and, if so, exactly what we'd work on.

What happens on the day?

Your child sits with an educator for a short level-check in each subject while you settle in nearby. Then we sit down with you, one-on-one, and talk through what the assessment showed and what we'd recommend. Most families are in and out inside an hour.

The whole visit, start to finish. No surprises.

Your child works with one educator the whole time, so they get personal attention and never feel lost in a crowd. The check is pitched to feel achievable, not intimidating. We want to see how they think, and a stressed child doesn't show us much.

Does my child need to prepare?

No, and please don't. The assessment works best when it shows us how your child genuinely works on the day. Cramming or coaching beforehand hides the very gaps we're trying to find, which makes the recommendation less useful to you.

There's nothing to study and nothing to bring but a pencil case. Tell your child it's a quick, friendly catch-up with a teacher, not an exam. That's the honest truth of it.

Do I stay while it happens?

You're welcome to stay in the centre the whole time. Your child works with the educator while you wait, and then we sit down together so you hear what we found firsthand and can ask anything you like.

What do we walk away with?

A clear, honest picture of where your child is, and a straight recommendation. If we think we can help, we'll show you the plan we'd build, pitched to your child's ability rather than just their year level. If we don't think you need us, we'll say that too.

Every program we design starts from this assessment. We build it around your child's actual level, fill the gaps underneath, add extension where they're ready, and align it to the Victorian and Australian curricula. It's reviewed and adjusted every term as they grow. You can read more about how it works.

What if the assessment shows my child doesn't need tutoring?

Then we'll tell you exactly that. An honest recommendation is the whole point. Some families leave with reassurance and a few suggestions for home, and come back a year later when something changes. We'd rather earn your trust than enrol a child who doesn't need us.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the assessment take?

About 30 minutes per subject, so roughly an hour if you're considering both Maths and English, plus a short one-on-one chat with you afterwards. Most families are done within the hour.

Is the assessment really free?

Yes, completely free, with no cost and no obligation to enrol. The honest recommendation at the end is the whole purpose.

What should my child bring or study beforehand?

Nothing to study, and just a pencil case to bring. Preparing actually hides the gaps we're looking for, so it's best to come as you are.

What year levels can be assessed?

We assess children from Foundation to Year 10 in Maths and English, plus Years 3 to 9 for Selective and Scholarship preparation. The program is matched to your child's ability, not their age.
