Selective vs scholarship
What's the difference between selective entry and scholarship?
Selective entry covers Victoria's four academically selective government high schools (Melbourne High, Mac.Robertson, Nossal and Suzanne Cory), with the entrance exam sat in Year 8 for Year 9 entry. It also covers entry to High Achievers, SEAL and STEM programmes, with tests sat in Year 6 or Year 7 for Year 7 entry, so selective candidates are typically in Years 6, 7 and 8. Scholarship exams are run by individual private, independent and grammar schools (usually ACER, EduTest or the school's own paper) to award fee reductions, and are sat across Years 3 to 9.

Scholarship entrance exams test four discrete strands. Most preparation focuses on the one or two parents already know about. Lynn's gives every strand its own weekly attention.

The runway
The earlier you start, the calmer the year of the test.
Most families enrol six to twelve months out. Some come earlier, some later. Here's what the runway looks like.
Diagnostic and foundations.
Full diagnostic across the four strands. Foundations built where they need to be. Pace is steady, the pressure is low, but the work is structured and accurate.
Full-paper practice, weekly.
Real test-style papers under timed conditions, every week. Targeted strand work follows each paper based on what showed up in marking. The patterns become visible.
Mock exams and interview prep.
Full mock-exam weeks, final polish on weak strands, and interview coaching for the schools that shortlist. Your child walks in having already done this exam half a dozen times.

Which scholarship exams does Lynn's prepare for?
The two big test providers used by most Victorian independent, private and grammar schools (ACER and EduTest), plus the individual entrance papers some schools set themselves. The underlying skill set is consistent across them; we tune the practice papers and timing to the schools your family is targeting.
Which schools are we talking about?
Independent, private and grammar schools that offer academic, all-rounder or means-tested scholarships, the kind that can substantially reduce or cover fees. Families come to us targeting a wide range of Melbourne independent and grammar schools; the preparation is the same, the paper and interview style is what we tailor.
What's the difference between a scholarship test and selective entry?
Selective entry covers Victoria's four select-entry government schools (test sat in Year 8 for Year 9 entry) and the High Achievers, SEAL and STEM programme tests (sat in Year 6 or Year 7 for Year 7 entry). A scholarship test is an independent or grammar school's own equivalent, usually an ACER- or EduTest-style entrance exam plus interviews. How early should we start?
Most families start six to twelve months out. Twelve months gives a calm runway to build all four strands properly; six months is enough for a focused, well-structured campaign. Earlier is fine, especially if your child needs to lift one strand before the others can compound. The free assessment will tell you honestly which runway is realistic.
Do you guarantee a scholarship?
No, and we'd be cautious of anyone who does. Scholarship places are limited and outcomes depend on factors outside any tutor's control. What we promise is structured, honest, well-marked preparation that gives your child the best shot, and a real understanding of what the test and interview ask for. For successful candidates, we also provide interview coaching.
What if my child doesn't win a scholarship?
The work is never wasted. The four strands are exactly the skills that carry into Year 9, VCE and beyond, and many of our students still gain entry to their target school or pick up a place elsewhere, simply confident and well ahead of year level. Several also go on to sit the government selective test with the same preparation behind them.
What does it cost?
The Selective & Scholarship programme is $120 per week: up to three hours of class time, the full worksheet set, weekly homework, and practice tests under timed conditions. Plus a one-off $40 enrolment fee covering your child's personalised programme design.
