Primary school English sets the benchmark for how your child will learn for the rest of their school years. More often than not, children who love primary school learning will continue to have a positive outlook on learning as they continue through middle, secondary and even into tertiary education.
Having a solid English foundation is essential for every child. Why? Quite simply it is the one subject that is used every day, is the only subject that is compulsory in VCE and it’s required for every career. Being able to string a correct sentence together, enjoy correct grammar and punctuation, and be able to correctly structure an essay are all areas that go far beyond primary school education.
Primary school is where correct English (and an enjoyment for the subject!) starts.
Lynn’s Learning Primary School English Program
Our Primary English programs offer English tuition in all areas of the Australian primary school English curriculum. Our English tutoring program includes:
- Spelling
- Grammar
- Reading
- Comprehension
- Sentence Structure (at primary level)
- Essay Structure (we begin this as soon as a child can string 3-4 sentences together)
- Creative Writing
- Argumentative Essay Writing
In addition to this, we also include NAPLAN preparation for Literacy examinations for all children studying English with us in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. ICAS preparation for Literacy examinations is also provided to any students who have opted to sit this exam.
Where does our Primary School English program start?
At the very start (usually Kinder aged children), we begin by assisting in improving motor skills and hand-eye coordination. This is the very start of learning to write; simply being able to hold a pencil and begin to trace letters. We also begin reading tutoring alongside this, using phonics to get children to begin saying how the letter sounds.
From there, our English tuition program moves into cloze exercises where children are required to read to our staff and fill in blanks, colour in certain objects and so forth. Much of the primary English tuition we do requires an amount of one-on-one time with our tutors to help listen and assist in reading words or letters.
Spelling, grammar and comprehension follow shortly after – first with small passages of text (maybe 3 -4 sentences) and gradually increasing in size and complexity. We also teach correct sentence format (this usually starts at Prep/Foundation level) and once a child can comfortably write 2-3 sentences, we also begin teaching essay structure and creative writing.
