Each child is unique and learns in their way and in their own time. Classroom teaching moves quickly to cover the Australian Mathematics Curriculum. This often-fast paced learning environment does not allow for extra instruction for a child who needs a little more time to understand the concept. It’s also easy for children to “get by” with misunderstanding concepts in the early years of school – but when these arise in the later years, they are more of a concern and can severely affect the child in their secondary or VCE studies.

We begin with a free assessment which reviews your child’s strengths and any trouble areas. While this is based on the “average” for their year level, our assessments aim to look not just at concepts of immediate concern, but also the foundation skills to find any gaps or weaknesses in their skillset leading to the area of concern. For example, you might being your child in concerned that they don’t understand fractions. From the assessment, we might find that your child actually has gaps in their knowledge of division. We know that working on these gaps are required to help your child gain the knowledge to successfully understand fractions.
While sometimes this means we have to take learning backwards a little, we are always conscious (partially in the older year levels) that your child still needs to gain knowledge in the specific area of concern – as they are usually learning it simultaneously at school. It’s for this reason that we tailor specific programs which not only look at the immediate area of concern but also at building a stronger foundation where any weaknesses have been found.
