NAPLAN Preparation
At Lynn’s Learning, we specialise in Maths Tuition and English Tuition to strengthen the skills your child learns at school, and to help identify and re-educate areas that your child may have missed or been weaker in. Part of our programs, particularly for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9, is to help prepare for NAPLAN.
What is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN stands for The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. This is a national test that runs annually for all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and is used to assess the skills of each child in different areas and rank these against all other children at the same year level across the country.
NAPLAN tests your child’s ability to comprehend and utilise the following skills:
Reading
Writing
Language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
Numeracy
NAPLAN does not test the day-to-day information that your child is taught but is primarily created:
To assess knowledge, skills and understandings appropriate to students in particular year levels
To be interesting and engaging to students throughout Australia
To challenge students at all levels of ability
What will NAPLAN tell you?
In many ways, NAPLAN can be seen as a benchmarking system which can help you understand where your child’s skills in the above areas are in comparison to the Australian average for the same year level. NAPLAN can also illustrate any “problems areas” which can act as a red flag for missed learning or misunderstood concepts. It can also help highlight areas that your child is particularly strong in – potentially even indicating that it may be worth enrolling into a scholarship or selective entry exam.
Why we help prepare for NAPLAN
For many children, sitting NAPLAN exams is a daunting experience. Particularly for younger students in years 3 and 5 who may never have sat a big examination before, NAPLAN can cause a bit of anxiety. Going into an exam anxious or nervous (or both!) can hinder how well a student will perform which can result in less-than-expected results. It’s our aim to help students overcome these nerves before they get into their NAPLAN exams so that they can perform at their best.
How we help students prepare for NAPLAN
At Lynn’s Learning, we work hard to ensure that your child has strong foundation skills in reading, writing, numeracy and language conventions in our day-to-day tuition. When it comes to preparing for NAPLAN, we begin teaching other necessary skills as well – one critical requirement being the ability to work to a time pressure.
All Lynn’s Learning students sitting NAPLAN will undergo some preparation before the examination dates come around. This process includes completing practise tests – both timed and against the clock – to teach children the concepts involved in the exams as well as teaching them exam time-management.
English students at Lynn’s Learning are also coached in argumentative essay writing to assist them in how to plan and write, while managing their time, during the NAPLAN exam. This is particularly important for students in year 3 who may be completely new to the concept of essay writing.
