NAPLAN without the stress: a Victorian parent's guide
Every March, NAPLAN sparks a wave of worry. It matters far less than most parents fear. Here's what it is and how to keep it low-stress.

Every year around March, NAPLAN sends a quiet ripple of anxiety through Victorian households. Parents worry their child will be judged, children pick up the worry, and a low-stakes check turns into a high-stress event. It doesn't need to. NAPLAN matters far less than the nerves suggest, and the calmest preparation is usually the best.
What is NAPLAN, and who sits it?
Does NAPLAN actually matter?
The most useful thing NAPLAN can do for a family is flag something early. If a result is well below where your child usually sits, it's worth a closer look. Treated that way, as a gentle check rather than a judgement, it's genuinely helpful.
What do the results mean?

The single best preparation is the boring one: a child who reads regularly and has solid number skills will do fine without any cramming at all. If you want to do something, a calm look at a sample test together beats a stack of practice booklets.
How to support your child without the stress
- Keep your own nerves off your child. If you treat it as routine, they will too.
- Cover the basics. A good sleep and breakfast do more on the day than any last-minute revision.
- Demystify the format. One look at a sample test removes most of the fear of the unknown.
- Frame it honestly. "It just shows your teachers how you're going, so there's nothing to worry about."
The Lynn's approach: build the skills year-round
We don't teach to NAPLAN, and we don't run cram courses for it. We build strong reading, writing and maths foundations all year, with a low student-to-educator ratio so no child gets lost, which means NAPLAN simply reflects the progress your child has already made. If a result does flag a gap, that's useful, and a starting point for a conversation rather than a cause for panic.

When is NAPLAN in 2026?
NAPLAN 2026 runs from 11 to 23 March, for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The dates are set nationally each year, so check with your child's school for their exact test days within that window.
Can you prepare for NAPLAN?
The most useful preparation is familiarity: a practice run or two so your child knows the format and online tools. Heavy drilling tends to add stress without improving results, because NAPLAN reflects skills built over years, not a single course.
Does NAPLAN affect selective entry?
No. The Victorian selective entry exam is a separate test run by ACER and sat in Year 8. NAPLAN is a national check of progress and isn't used to decide selective places.
What do the NAPLAN proficiency levels mean?
Since 2023, results use four levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs additional support. They show where your child sits against national standards and whether extra help might be useful, rather than ranking them.
